This image is of a forest understory in Platte Clove, a steep, narrow valley that is the first of three breaks in the plateau that is the Catskills Escarpment. A “Kloove” is a “cut or gash in the body of Mother Earth” in Old Dutch. McCabe spent the spring and early summer of 2019 making forays into this area, meditating on human impact as well as the mystery, character, and wildness of these fabled woods. Utilizing a custom-built, large format digital camera, he was inspired by mid-19th century Hudson River School artists who lived and/or worked in the Hudson Valley region.
Daniel McCabe is a New York-based filmmaker and photographer. His work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, Time Magazine, BBC, Al Jazeera and CNN among other outlets.
